Portrait Photography

Yesterday we offered members of our Women's Club the chance to have their children's photos taken in exchange for our Photography group getting some experience in Portrait Photography.

I am the only one of the participating photographers with young children, so it was up to me to remind my friends that a tripod would probably not be that useful, since children don't stay still very long.

It was slightly challenging, the sun was streaming in the window.

When the sun shade was lowered, it was too dark.

My camera is a basic Nikon D40 and I don't have an extra flash, just the pop up one. Without flash the photos were too dark and grainy, and of course blurred as the camera tried to compensate by using slower shutter speed.

With the flash the photos were just too bright and startling light.

I read on a website recently about putting a tissue on top of the flash to act as a very basic diffuser so tried this out. Still not perfect but much better than the alternative. I did have some better photos, but since they are not my kids, I can obviously not share them online. I like the one of my daughter, the one of my son is slightly too dark.
