I know I shouldn't read it, but someone on Twitter linked to the Daily Mail and my eye was caught by the story reporting that Steve Jobs had only "six weeks to live". The DM was referring to the story in the National Enquirer that Jobs is terminally ill and near the end.
Does anyone else find this horrifying? Not only the printing of the photos, but the speculation. Two doctors who have never met Jobs give their considered opinion about the life expectancy of a man based on the photos of his bum.
Why is it in the public's interest to see these photos, to read this speculation. How about treating the man with the respect he deserves and leaving him and his family in peace while he seeks medical treatment for his illness.
It reminded me of the gleeful printing of pictures of other celebs - Patrick Swayze and Micheal Douglas spring to mind. You could almost sense the tabloids' disappointment when Douglas was pictured looking healthier. Recovered from cancer pics obviously don't sell so many newspapers as the gaunt, "only has weeks to live".
The photographers and the publishers of the National Enquirer are not known for their tact and diplomacy. They should be ashamed of themselves for adding to a distressing time for Steve Jobs and his family and friends.
