Judging the Judge

I really am running out of WTFs - the latest usage was on reading this blog  from the wonderful Cath Elliott.

Judge John Rogers - or Big John as he is known - feels that the woman retracting her false rape statement is more in need of a jail term than those convicted of downloading child porn, or  breaking their wife's arm. Even headbutting your wife, breaking her nose and disfiguring her jaw is not deemed by Big John to be sufficiently serious to warrant a jail term.

How can we wonder that the rate of rape reports are so low, that women suffer in silence and men are allowed to go on raping again and again? When the media is full of stories about false rape accusations, and very few rape convictions. While not condoning the actions of Amanda Bradley, I was struck by the comment of the then 18 year old who was described by the police as being "very immature and naive". When asked why she had accused her ex-boyfriend of rape, she said, "Because I'd just had enough of him, because every time I got a boyfriend he still wanted sex with me and everything like that".

Am I the only one who reads that as the man pressuring his girlfriend into sex? He was 28, she was 18 years old and "naive".

Am I the only one wondering about the fine line between pressuring the woman to have sex and forcing her?

The Mumsnet thread I linked to - the OP of that thread took the time to go through the thread and work out approximate statistics:

There were 73 replies to the original question.

Only 14 (19%) said they would report it and 3 of those said they wouldn't take it to trial.

There were 29 (27%) maybes

22 (30%) probably not

17 (23%) no

Of people who said they were raped 32 (63%) didn't report it vs 12 (27%) who did.

Which suggests to me that it is high time UK did something to improve these figures.
